Buying a truck for the XPCamper

March 31, 2015

After searching on Craigslist and AutoTrader we found the truck we were looking for in Sandy Utah: a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT Quad Cab with a Cummins 5.9L turbo diesel engine, 4WD with only 48 000 miles.

Because our journey will take us through South America, we had to go with a 2007 truck or older because of the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel ULSD that is not available in most Central and South American countries.

Since we were in Florida and the truck in Utah, we hired the Lemon Squad to do an inspection and everything came out good.

We then contacted Montway Auto Transport and we had our truck delivered within 3 days on March 31st 2015.

The next step will be the addition of the V1 XPCamper in June 2015 (ended up being the end of August).

We will be leaving Florida May 5th heading for the Overland Expo West May 15-17, 2015 in Flagstaff AZ to get “outfitted, trained and inspired”. Then Grass Valley CA to the XPCamper factory.

  7. Drink the water, if you don’t you will not make it. There is aqua puruficado in every town and we fill the tank with that. We eat the street food and lots of tortillas and haven’t gotten sick yet. So take any advice from non-overlanders with a grain of salt.

  8. I wanted to ask you what arrangements gave you made to get ac toss El Choco and thru Darien, Pansma into Colombia? As far as I know the road is not finished yet. 🚓

    1. Hi Gerry, if the Ferry Xpress does not resume its operations by the time we are ready to cross, we will have to ship in a container or roro. We will worry about it when we get closer. We are now near Biloxi MS, New Orleans tomorrow .

      1. I’m being told from PTY (Panama) that the Ferry Express is out of business. Looking for other alternatives for you guys

  9. Good luck guys. Don’t drink the water inMexico, Honduras or San Salvador and stay away from the tortillas. Panama has good ceviche, fried fish and cold beer though. Good luck
